Digital Cinema and AI: Cultivating a New Nouvelle Vague and How to Adapt Film School Pedagogy

This presentation analyzes the convergence of digital cinema and AI as a fertile ground for a new Nouvelle Vague in filmmaking. As we teeter on the brink of a technological revolution, there lies the potential for a resurgence of expressive filmmaking.

AI represents a paradigm shift akin to historical advancements like the advent of faster 16mm film for the Nouvelle Vague or DV cameras for Dogma95, catalyzing innovation among filmmakers. These AI tools redefine filmmaking processes, hinting at a transformative era of expressive cinema and amplifying diverse voices, including those of minorities.

Film schools are pivotal in this evolution, nurturing emerging filmmakers through the exploration and implementation of AI tools. We’ll analyze strategies for integrating emerging technologies into curriculum design with specific attention to the evaluation of student work in light of AI assistance. Ethical considerations, assessment methodologies, and best practices for ensuring academic integrity.

We will explore a case study of Machine for the Aura, a micro-budget drama which received international acclaim at the Beijing International Film Festival and Warsaw International Film Festival. It explores the boundaries of scientific academia and the struggles of a female researcher. This film, enhanced by AI tools in post-production showcases the potential of AI in shaping impactful cinematic narratives.
