Leveraging AI in Film Education in the Global South: Considerations in Innovation, Integration and Cultural Bias

This presentation explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into filmmaking education in the Global South, focusing on the opportunities and challenges it presents. It first discusses key opportunities, primarily looking at enhanced creativity and efficiency, as well as increased accessibility. AI tools can streamline filmmaking processes, making them more efficient and accessible, thereby fostering innovative storytelling. By harnessing its strengths, AI can be utilized in filmmaking education to foster these attributes.

However, the integration of AI also brings significant challenges relevant to the education space. The Global South encompasses diverse regions that face unique challenges and specificities, particularly in the realms of arts and cultural expression. Consequently, filmmaking practices and filmmaking education necessitate nuanced engagement with these multifaceted realities. In consideration of this, as well as the increasing access to advancing technologies such as AI, this presentation, therefore, explores the ethics and risks of cultural bias in AI algorithms that favor Western perspectives and ideologies, and the importance of informed integration of AI that represents diverse socio-cultural contexts. Lastly, it will discuss the digital divide and the varying access to technology in the Global South, which can affect the use of AI in filmmaking education.

Drawing on case studies from South African film education, this presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of how AI can be both a transformative and a challenging force in the realm of filmmaking education in the Global South.
